DELMONT, Pennsylvania -- Delmont Police Officer Dylan Keffer and K-9 Dirk were injured Sunday evening in a traffic crash while assisting a neighboring agency in Westmoreland County.

Chief T.J. Klobucar said Officer Keffer and K-9 Dirk were responding to assist Murrysville Police Department when the incident occurred, according to a news release

Officer Keffer had been helping Murrysville officers with an unrelated vehicle accident on Route 22 and was later dispatched to a second incident within the municipality.

As Officer Keffer attempted to respond, he activated his emergency lights and was struck from behind by another driver, police said. Both the officer and K-9 were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

Chief Klobucar said Officer Keffer and K-9 Dirk were treated and released and are recovering at home. Their injuries were not described as life-threatening.

In a statement, Klobucar thanked the community for its support and acknowledged the responding agencies that assisted at the scene, including Pennsylvania State Police, local police departments, emergency medical services, and fire departments.
