A wanted suspect in a pickup truck towing trailer struck a Nevada police cruiser and nearly ran over an officer while fleeing a traffic stop earlier this month before he was apprehended following a vehicle and foot chase.

The incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. Sept. 15 when Spaks police tried to pull over a suspect wanted on a battery with a deadly weapon felony charge, Deputy Chief Clint Bellamy said in a critical incident briefing that included drone and body camera footage. The suspect, identified as Rodrigo Gonzales, had pulled into a parking lot before taking off in his pickup, which was pulling a flatbed trailer, as officers got out of their vehicles.

Gonzales circled around a commercial building, clipping it as he approached the stopped officers. He then sped at a Sparks officer, who was outside their vehicle but avoided the truck before opening fire.

Gonzales got back on the roadway and drove away. As he fled, he struck a fence and an occupied Reno police curiser, injuring the officer inside.

Police pursued Gonzales, and he unexpected jumped out of his truck while it was still moving. The pickup kept rolling and crashed into two occupied vehicles, but the occupants were uninjured.

Officers chased down Gonzales on foot, and the suspect surrendered without incident. He was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening, but it wasn't clear if he suffered those injuries from the officer's gunfire or from jumping out of his truck.

Gonzales faces multiple charges including assault with the use of a deadly weapon on a police officer. Additonal charges might also be filed.

The incident is under investigation.
