An armed man accused of threatening runners while on an electric scooter was fatally shot last week by Texas police when he pointed a gun at officers during a foot chase.

The shooting happened just before 8:13 a.m. after Austin police received multiple 9-1-1 calls about a man with a handgun on an electric scooter who was threatening people, the department stated in news release that included body camera footage of the incident. The suspect allegedly hit a female during an argument with a running group after the man was told to slow down.

A brief physical altercation broke out, and the suspect pulled out a handgun. He allegedly pointed it at multiple people and threatened to shoot them before fleeing on his scooter, police said.

When officers reached the scene, they began a search for the suspect. Just before 10:30 a.m., police found a scooter believed to be the one the suspect rode.

Officers found a man matching the suspect's description near a bike and walking trail shortly after 11 a.m. and watched as he got on a scooter. A chase ensued when the suspect—later identified as Emmanuel Diaz—rode away as officers ordered him to stop.

The chase was captured on police body cameras. 

Diaz eventually abandoned the scooter and fled on foot while continued ordering him to stop and drop his gun. As officers closed in, Diaz fell to the ground and pointed his handgun at officers, who opened fire. 

Officers provided life-saving measures to Diaz until medics arrived. But the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured in the incident. The shooting was under investigation.
