Watch: Mich. Police Officer Catches Infant from Burning 2-Story Home

A Michigan police officer caught an infant who was dropped by a mother from the second floor of a burning home last week, and the amazing rescue was captured by officers' body camera footage.

The incident happened shortly after 4:15 p.m. Friday when Kalamazoo police and firefighters responded to a two-story residential fire, according to a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety news release. Flames had engulfed the home's porch when crews reached the scene, and a woman trapped on the second floor was seen leaning out a window as she held her young child. 

In body camera footage from the fire, the woman is seen safely dropping her baby into the waiting arms of Officer Michael Arnett, who quickly handed the child to an equipment operator. First responders then used a ladder, so that the woman could climb down and escape the fire.

"I got a baby of my own, so I knew the first thing I would do was get all the occupants out of the house," Arnett told WXMI-TV. "Property can be replaced. Obviously, lives can’t."

The woman and her child were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but both were uninjured. 

Crews extinguished the fire, which is under investigation.
