Portland police released body camera footage of the arrest of a man accused of breaking into a family’s home and threatening to kill them. Police say the man hit an officer with a rock during the arrest.

Police responded to a burglary in progress Thursday night just before midnight in the 3900 block of North Overlook Terrace. A woman reported a man she didn’t know, later identified as 35-year-old Timothy Reed, broke into her home, where she and her children were, police said. She told police she grabbed a stick and chased Reed from the home.

Police said Reed grabbed a metal trash can lid and fled. Officers found him in Overlook Park, where they tried to stop him, but he refused commands, police said. Reed fled back into the neighborhood through an alley, and officers ran after him, calling for backup.

Police said Reed turned to face the officers at North Concord Avenue north of North Prescott Street on a ramp leading up to the pedestrian bridge that spans Going Street. Body camera footage shows Reed was holding the metal trash can lid in one hand and a softball-sized rock in the other.

As the lead officer moved in to arrest Reed, he hit the officer in the head with the rock, police said. The officer took him to the ground and, as others arrived, they handcuffed Reed.

Body camera footage shows the officer running after Reed, who repeatedly taunts police to “shoot me.”

During the foot chase, the officer tells Reed he is under arrest. Reed replies, “No, I am not,” calls the officer a pedophile and says he is not afraid to die.

When Reed turns to the officer on the ramp, he tells the officer, “I’m not afraid of you, pig, I’ll kill you,” body camera footage shows. After police cuff him, he repeatedly apologizes for hitting the officer.

Reed was arrested on suspicion of burglary, assault, escape, assaulting a police officer and criminal mischief.

Police said the injured officer was taken to a hospital, treated and released, and has returned to duty.
