"During the fight, with both men on the ground wrestling, Rainey managed to get a finger into the officer’s pistol holster and discharge one round from the gun while it was holstered," stated the department, which added that no one was struck by the round.
While the two continued to fight, Taylor Johanson, a sergeant with the Kent Police Department, was driving by after recently flying into the city when he saw the confrontation. Johanson stopped and began to help Kinsey, pulling Rainey away from the officer.
"I think we’d been on the flight for eight hours, so it took me a second to realize what was going on," Johanson said in a department video. "And then as I ran over, I could see the male on top of the officer assaulting him quite badly, so I decided to jump in and tackle him, take him off."
Finally, Kinsey deployed his Taser and subdued Rainey. The officer and Johanson then handcuffed the suspect.
"The thoughts going through my head was he’s not getting my gun away from me, and I’m just going t have to hang on until somebody gets here," said an appreciative Kinsey. "I could see blue lights coming to me, but they weren’t quite there, and all of a sudden, I see Sergeant Taylor running over to me and getting him off of me, and then he helped me take him into custody. I was honestly very scared, so it’s probably the closest near-death experience I can say I’ve had, and probably the most traumatic on this job."
On Monday, the department released body camera footage of the incident. The agency also thanked Johanson for his assistance.
"An international THANK YOU at MNPD HQ today as Chief Drake & Officer Peter Kinsey expressed their sincere gratitude to Kent Police Sgt. Taylor Johanson," the department stated in a social media post.
Rainey was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and unlawfully being a pedestrian on the interstate system.
