Video: Man with Machete Attacks Calif. Police K‑9 After Being Shot

A machete-wielding man continued to attack California police after he was shot several times last month, injuring a K-9, newly released security and body camera footage shows.

The incident happened at around 12:10 p.m. April 20 when Oxnard police received multiple calls concerning a man, later identified as Anastacio Meneses, who was swinging a machete near an intersection, the department stated in a news release, which included video footage. When police reached the scene, they found Meneses inside a restaurant, and while officers immediately evacuate several patrons, two employees remained inside.  

Police began to de-escalate the situation, ordering Meneses to get off the ground move away from the machete and leave the restaurant. When Meneses stood up, he quickly grabbed the machete, flipped over a table and raised the weapon.

An officer opened fire, and Meneses was struck and knocked to the floor. Despite being shot, Meneses, still holding the machete, got back up and charged at officers.

The officer began shooting again, and Meneses was sent to the ground a second time after being shot. But he didn't drop the machete.

For about two minutes, officers ordered Meneses to toss away the machete and crawl towards them so they could provide first-aid. When he wouldn't do that, a K-9 was deployed.

Meneses attacked dog, cutting the animal's upper lip. Finally, officers were able to disarm and handcuff the suspect. 

Meneses was to the hospital, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his arms, hand and torso. Meneses remains in the hospital, and he faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, felony assault of a police service dog and exhibiting a deadly weapon with the intent to resist arrest by a police officer. 

The injured police K-9 was treated at a veterinary clinic. No officers were hurt in the incident.  

The shooting is under investigation.
