California police officers clashed last month with a knife-wielding man who allegedly called 9-1-1 on himself, claiming that a man was chasing people on a school campus.

Sacramento police responded to a March 10 report of an armed disturbance on a school campus after a caller reported a man with a knife was chasing people, the department stated in a news release. The call came in just before 6:45 p.m., and the caller gave descriptions of the suspect, another adult male and the knife involved.

While officers were en route, a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office helicopter arrived overhead and located a man matching the suspect’s description in front of the school. The air unit ordered the suspect multiple times to drop the knife.

When police reached the scene, officers made contact with the suspect and also ordered him to surrender while trying to de-escalate the situation. The suspect refused to drop the knife and continued advancing toward officers.

That's when police opened fire and deployed a Taser. Officers detained the suspect and provided medical aid before being taken to the hospital.

The suspect was medically cleared March 13, and he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. He faces multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Investigators later discovered that the armed suspect was the same person who had called 9-1-1 to report the disturbance. The incident is under investigation.
