Bodycam Shows Milwaukee Police Officer Dragged as Suspect Drives Off in Tow Truck
What to know
- A Milwaukee police officer fatally shot a wanted parole violator after the suspect drove off in a tow truck while the officer was clinging to the vehicle.
- The encounter unfolded during a parole check after the officer's repeated commands to stop.
- The officer and a passenger in the truck were taken to a hospital, and the incident is under investigation.
The officer clung to the side of the truck for several blocks and repeatedly ordered the suspect to stop, police said. Investigators said the officer warned the suspect he would shoot if the truck did not stop, but the suspect continued ignoring the commands.
The officer then opened fire, and the suspect, identified only as a 35-year-old man, was fatally struck. The shooting brought the vehicle to a stop, police said.
The passenger in the truck was not injured by the gunfire but was transported to a hospital as a precaution. The 46-year-old officer, who has over 21 years of service, was taken to the hospital for injuries.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is investigating the incident, with the West Allis Police Department serving as the lead agency. The officer was placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings.
