A Milwaukee police officer clung from a truck's driver side window as he was dragged by the fleeing vehicle for several blocks Thursday before fatally shooting a suspect behind the wheel.

Police and a Department of Corrections officer were checking on a suspect with a parole violation—identified as Johnathan Otto—at around 10 a.m., WISN-TV reports. When they arrived at the location, Otto and a passenger were inside a flatbed truck.

An officer ordered Otto out of the truck, but he refused to comply. That's when the officer tried to pull him out of the vehicle.

Otto suddenly sped away with the officer hanging from the driver side window. They traveled for several blocks, with the officer ordering Otto to stop and warning that he would shoot.

Otto refused to comply, and the officer opened fire. Otto was fatally struck, and the truck finally stopped.

Otto, 35, was on probation for fleeing police in stolen vehicles on multiple occasions. His probation was set to end in 2029.

The truck passenger was not struck in the shooting, but was taken to the hospital as precaution.

The officer was injured during the incident, and he was taken to the hospital. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The incident is under investigation.
