What to know

  • A Rochester police officer is recovering after being shot in the lower body during an early-morning confrontation with an armed suspect on March 20, police said.
  • The suspect fled the scene but was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being located by a police drone several hours later, the department reports.
  • Police said no law enforcement member fired a weapon during the incident, and the Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate.

At the scene, police set up a perimeter while officers swarmed the area to search for the suspect. The department's drone unit also was deployed, and at about 5 a.m., the aircraft spotted the suspect's heat signature in a pile of brush and debris behind a building.

Caught in the drone's spotlight, the suspect shot himself in the upper body. When a SWAT unit moved in, officers found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to police, the man matched the description of the suspect who shot the officer. The man was identified as Shatique Cato, a 34-year-old who had two felony convictions and had allegedly shot another man March 9, according to WHEC-TV.

The wounded officer has been with the department for over a year. The department stated that he "will be on medical leave for the foreseeable future."

No Law Enforcement member fired a weapon during this incident. The Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to call 911.
