What to know

  • A Port Orange road rage call escalated into a violent encounter early Saturday when the suspect opened fire during a pursuit, seriously wounding South Daytona Police Officer Jake Fessenden.
  • Police said the suspect crashed during the chase and began shooting when he got out of the vehicle, striking Fessenden in the chest and leg before the officer returned fire and temporarily stopped him.
  • As officers treated Fessenden, the wounded suspect crawled into a Daytona Beach police cruiser and tampered with electronics, causing it to catch fire before he was taken into custody and hospitalized.

No one was injured, and the other driver called 9-1-1. Martin fled the scene, and South Daytona Police Officer Jake Fessenden was returning home when he spotted the suspect's vehicle, kicking off a chase.

The pursuit ended when Martin crashed, and he began shooting as he exited his wrecked vehicle. Fessden was struck in the chest and leg, but he was still able to fire off shots.

“He fought through being shot, returned fire and took the suspect down at least temporarily,” Chief Joseph LaSata told WFTV.

Other officers helped Fessenden get to the hospital following the shooting. Despite being shot in "two critical areas," with one of the bullets missing an artery by a millimeter, Fessenden is in stable condition and expected to recover, according to Daytona Beach Police Deputy Chief Tim Morgan.

"God was on his side today," Morgan told WKMG-TV.

While officers were providing aid to Fessenden, a wounded Martin crawled into a Daytona Beach police cruiser. According to WKMG, the suspect tampered with the vehicle's electronics, starting a fire that engulfed the cruiser.

In body camera footage from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, officers are seen using ballistic shields to approach the burning vehicle. Martin was then pulled from the cruiser and taken to the hospital.

Martin is expected to be charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. The incident is under investigation.
