New York police officers saved a family trapped on a home's second-floor during a fast-moving fire Monday.

Mamaroneck police released body camera footage of the rescue as officers worked alongside firefighters when a fire broke out at a home, CBS News reports. Heavy flames and smoke engulfed the residence, forcing the occupants to retreat to the second floor.

While firefighters attacked the flames, officers grabbed a ladder to reach residents at a second-story window, over 20 feet off the ground. Video captured officers reassuring the trapped family, which included a crying baby.

An officer climbed down the ladder with the baby before giving the child to a colleague. The officer then scaled the ladder again, this time rescuing an older child who called for a parent.

"All right, we’re gonna get mommy,” the officer told the child.

The Mamaroneck officers, along with a Larchmont police officer, helped other occupants down the ladder. Witnesses told CBS News that police and firefighters closely coordinated their efforts, making the rescues appear seamless, despite the intense heat and smoke.

Five people were rescued from the fire and rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to a police news release. One police officer was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and is expected to make a full recovery

Community members praised the swift response, emphasizing that the outcome could have been far worse without decisive action and interagency teamwork.
