Body camera video captured the heroic rescue of a woman who leaped into the arms of a Buffalo police officer to escape a two-alarm fire over the weekend.
The fire happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Sunday at a two-story home in Buffalo, WKBW-TV reports. Police officers were the first to arrive at the scene, and when they reached the burning residence, they encountered smoke pouring out and family members saying someone was still trapped inside.
Officer William Flockemer rushed into the home to make sure everyone was out and to stop other family members from going to the house's second floor. During that time, a woman was able to get to the home's roof.
The woman jumped from the roof and into the arms of Officers Nick McLean and Scott Becker, as well as a civilian, who caught her. Flames eventually engulfed the back of the house after everyone was able to safely escape.
“You never really plan for something like that," McLean told WKBW. "There was another citizen there assisting me to get her to safety.”
The police officers and the firefighters involved in the rescue were honored with certificates by the city Monday.
“The work that you see on these videos is work that firefighters and police officers do on a daily basis,” Buffalo Police Deputy Commissioner Joe Gramaglia said.
