• A newly hired Grand Rapids police officer was involved in a Dec. 8 shootout with a domestic assault suspect, marking the second time in a month a new officer has exchanged gunfire on duty.

• Police say the 51-year-old suspect opened fire during a high-risk traffic stop, and three officers returned about 40 rounds, fatally shooting the gunman.

• No officers were injured, and Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.
