Recently released video footage captured a strange and bloody incident last month in which a man jumped from the bed of a stranger's moving pickup truck before stealing a sheriff's deputy cruiser and leading authorities on a chase that involved gunfire and a crash.
The incident happened April 30 when a Sierra County sheriff's deputy caught up with Abraham Quezada, who was accused of hopping in and out of vehicles along a road just south of Truth or Consequences, KRQE-TV reports. In one instance, Quezada jumped from a moving car and into the bed of a stranger's pickup truck before leaping onto the road, a move that left his face and other parts of his body bloodied.
While the deputy talked with Quezada, he was joined by a New Mexico State Police officer. Quezada then bolted and stole the deputy's unlocked cruiser, with the deputy and the officer firing shots as the vehicle drove away.
A brief chase ensued until Quezada collided head-on with a New Mexico State Police SUV. The crash caused extensive damage to the cruiser, and Quezada was seriously injured.
Quezada was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
