Florida police officers are being praised for rescuing a baby from a car that was stolen with her still inside.
The incident, which was caught on body camera footage, happened in August when Tampa police responded to a call from a woman who said her car was stolen while her 11-month-old daughter was still in the vehicle, WFLA-TV reports. Thirty minutes following the call, the car was discovered at an intersection.
When officers reached the car, they found the child, who was overheated and lethargic, which had been sitting in the hot sun. They quickly put her in a cruiser and applied cold compresses. They also gave her water to help cool down.
The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was reunited with her mother. Medics said the child would have died if she had been in the car much longer, but she has made a full recovery since the incident.
The four officers involved in the rescue—Steven Zawacki, Martin Pollak, Anthony Hardesty and Landon Harsin—will be given a Life Saving Award during the department’s inaugural First Quarter Awards Ceremony on Thursday.
