Body camera footage of a confrontation between Arizona police and man brandishing a rifle late last year was released Thursday.
The incident happened shortly before noon Nov. 23 as Chandler police were responding to a report of a possible break-in at a home, KPHO-TV reports. Although the homeowner was away, security cameras picked up an intruder wearing a white mask and carrying inside the residence.
When officers reached the scene, they heard noises coming from the garage and discovered a man hiding behind a car once the garage door opened. They ordered the man to come out, but he retreated inside.
The man—armed with a rifle—was then found on the back porch. Again, the man ignored an officer's orders and would not drop his weapon. A detective opened fire when he thought the man was turning toward a colleague and feared for that officer's life.
The man was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. No police officers were injured in the incident.
