SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Axon has announced Axon Body 5, a new body-worn camera designed to give officers access to AI-powered information, improved connectivity and real-time operational support in the field.
The Axon Body 5 features 25 times the AI processing power of earlier-generation body cameras, improved low-light video and 20% longer battery life than the previous generation.
“Officers shouldn't have to choose between getting information and watching the scene. With Axon Body 5, they don't,” said Rick Smith, Axon founder and CEO. “They capture a license or document with the camera, keep their hands free and eyes up, and get information faster than writing it down and calling it in by radio. An officer fully engaged with the person in front of them, not down at a notepad, is a safer officer and a better-served community.”
Axon is introducing two versions: Axon Body 5 and Axon Body 5 Pro. Both feature upgraded computing architecture to support current and future AI capabilities, enhanced video and improved connectivity in urban and remote environments. The cameras also offer more precise location capabilities to help officers and remote support teams stay connected.
The Body 5 Pro adds a near-focus camera lens that can scan driver's licenses to check status and search for wants or warrants. Relevant information can be sent to Axon Fusus to support real-time operations. The camera also includes four additional front-facing speakers to improve audio projection, including real-time translations through Axon Assistant, and additional memory to support multiple AI tools simultaneously.
The camera is designed to work with Axon's broader AI Era Plan, which includes tools such as Draft One for generating report drafts from body-camera audio and Axon Assistant for voice-based information access and real-time translation.
Axon also announced Axon Guardian, a category of AI features intended to identify potential risks during active incidents and alert personnel when additional attention may be needed.
Two initial features include Escalation Detection and Approach Alert. Escalation Detection can identify potential conflicts when an Axon Body 4 or Body 5 camera is activated and recording, generating an alert in Axon Fusus. A human reviews the livestream and determines whether additional support or action is needed.
Approach Alert works with Axon Fleet 3. It can detect when the door of a stopped vehicle opens and alert the officer through the in-car display and body-worn camera.
Axon said Body 5 and Guardian prioritize human oversight and maintain agency control over data. The company's Responsible Innovation framework guides product development, with input from its independent Ethics and Equity Advisory Council.
General availability dates for Axon Body 5 and Axon Guardian have not yet been announced. Axon said features and capabilities vary by configuration.
