A Kenosha police officer returns fire after a homicide suspect began shooting

Kenosha police say a suspect in a deadly tavern shooting exchanged gunfire with responding officers before he was shot and wounded Sunday.

A suspect in a fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man opened fire Sunday on \Wisconsin police investigating the incident before he was shot and wounded by officers.

Kenosha police responded to reports of shots fired at a tavern at around 8:30 p.m., the department stated in a news release. When officers reached the scene,they found a gunshot victim, who later died from his injuries.

According to police, the 45-year-old suspect had fled the area, but officers located him nearby. As officers approached him, the suspect began shooting, with gunfire striking a cruiser.

Police returned fire, and the suspect was struck. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

No officers suffered "significant physical injuries" in the shooting, police said. Dashboard camera footage of the the incident was released Monday.

Both shootings are under investigation.
