More Than Just a Body Camera: AI Integration Adds Enhanced Features for Law Enforcement

A Colorado police officer overcame a language barrier with a driver during a traffic stop this week by using her body-worn camera to translate Mandarin into English.

The stop happened just before 10:15 p.m. Monday when a Parker police officer pulled over a vehicle with a burned out tailight, the department stated in a social media post. When the officer approached the driver, she discovered he only spoke Mandarin.

Instead of calling in and waiting for a translator, the officer used her body camera's translation feature. That allowed her to communicate with the driver, and the officer's bodycam captured the interaction.

"The technology let (the officer) communicate directly with the driver without waiting for a translator, making the traffic stop more efficient and ensuring important information could be exchanged," the department stated.

The officer's Axon Body 4 next-generation camera combines video livestreaming with bi-directional audio, and its built-in, voice-activated AI assistant supports over 50 languages. It also features a "Watch Me" button that allows officers to signal for "an additional set of eyes to watch their back when responding to calls," according to the camera's OFFICER.com product page.
