BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bakersfield Police Department released body-worn camera footage depicting the moments leading to an officer-involved shooting on Latina Drive in December 2025, which left the suspect, Fabian Lopez, in critical condition.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. on December 29, a two-officer patrol unit initiated a vehicle code enforcement traffic stop near Mohawk Street and Siena Lane, according to KBAK-TV.
The vehicle ultimately yielded at the intersection of Latina Drive and Pisa Way.
Police said a man inside the vehicle fled on foot eastbound along Latina Drive. When officers caught up with him, a physical struggle occurred. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly produced a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers, prompting the officer to discharge their firearm.
The department’s released body-worn video shows the officer pursuing the suspect and the moments of the struggle, including the alleged firearm threat. BPD has identified the incident as an officer-involved shooting and is conducting a continued investigation.
The department has stated that all procedures are being reviewed in accordance with standard use-of-force protocols, and the investigation is ongoing.
