Boston Police Department Using Life-Saving Tool and Training to Protect Officers and De-Escalate Violence

Sept. 8, 2021

Vector Defensive Systems, LLC is excited to announce that the Boston Police Department is leading the nation in using Vector Centerline Protection Police Shields and Safety Focused De-Escalation Training.

Under the direction of Sergeant Stephen Romano, Youth Violence Strike Force (YVSF), officers dedicated to removing dangerous guns from the streets of Boston are using the latest in de-escalation equipment and training to better protect the community and its officers.

The “Vector” is a maneuverable, lightweight, single-arm secured ballistic de-escalation shield that stores in the front of a patrol vehicle next to an officer. This smaller, stronger, lighter, and more versatile shield protects critical mass in tight spots.

It immediately stops attacks to the head, neck, and upper chest of an officer. The shield protects both officer and citizen, creating a safety barrier between them, giving the officer extra seconds to assess a situation and time to transition to a less-lethal force option, when possible, but still remain protected.

In hundreds of documented incidents over the past several years, shields have stopped guns, knives, bricks, bats, needles, machetes, and attacking dogs. Using these shields, officers were able to avoid tragedy and protect bystanders without ever having to fire a weapon.

Boston PD joins a large number of agencies around the country, including the Massachusetts State Police (MSP), Massachusetts Department of Correction (MADOC), Connecticut State Police (CSP), UNC Chapel Hill Hospitals Police, Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ), the United States Marshal Service (USMS), and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as well a myriad of local police and sheriff's departments that use this tool to de-escalate violence and better protect both the public and officers.

Due to its easy access and maneuverability, the Vector is used in every area of law enforcement. This shield has become a critical protection and de-escalation tool for patrol officers, motorcycle units, mounted patrols, school resource officers, gang units, narcotics teams, fugitive apprehension teams, riot patrols, SWAT, environmental police, marine patrols, and department of correction officers.

Vector provides de-escalation, emotionally distressed person (EDP) and active shooter training.  In multiple class evaluations, officers have said this is the best tool and training for law enforcement ever.

Vector is also proud to be taking the Chief Green Responder Alert Program for Autism Awareness nationwide. The YVSF joins a growing number of agencies now participating in this program to better protect autistic adults and children in the community. Vector provides de-escalation shields and training for officers as well as specially designed stickers for families to place on front doors or vehicles to alert officers that an autistic individual could be present.
