A Disney resort complex in Florida is apologizing for wrongly turning away attendees at a traffic safety conference this week for sporting apparel with law enforcement logos.
Police officers and law enforcement members at the Institute of Police
Technology and Management Symposium on Traffic Safety in Orlando were told by security that they couldn't enter the Disney Springs shopping and entertainment complex if they were wearing shirts and other clothing with agency logos, WKMG-TV reports. Attendees were told to wear plain attire if they wanted to enter Disney Springs.
"We were not allowed to enter wearing law enforcement related clothing," an officer who requested to be anonymous told WKMG. "They said we could turn it inside out."
On Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Jay Collins went to the conference to try to resolve the matter. He spoke to security officials, and a solution was reached Thursday.
"They will be able to wear a polo shirt appropriately when they walk in," Collins told WKMG. They won’t be rolled back."
Disney called the situation a misunderstanding with security, which thought law enforcement apparel would confuse guests. That policy interpretation was too conservative, and the company has apologized for the mix-up, representatives told WKMG.
The traffic safety conference ran from Monday to Thursday at Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista, which is in the Disney Springs complex.
