Philadelphia Transitions to Midnight-Blue Uniforms
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania -- As of Oct. 1, Philadelphia police officers began wearing the department’s newly designed midnight-blue uniform shirts.
The new uniform shirts will gradually appear across neighborhoods as the rollout continues by the Philadelphia Police Department.
"This update marks the next step in the Department’s historic transition to a uniform program that reflects both our proud history and our modern mission. The new midnight blue shirts reconnect us to the traditional look of the Philadelphia Police Department—worn for more than a century before powder blue was introduced in the 1970s—while aligning with the Department’s new midnight blue load-bearing ballistic vests," the department wrote in a statement. "The new design reinforces professionalism, authority, and familiarity; qualities that the public expects from its officers."
The transition to the new uniform will continue in phases as officers are issued their new shirts. Officers who have not yet received the new uniform shirts will continue to wear the powder blue shirts currently in use.
