Minn. Officer Accidentally Shot at Training

A Lino Lakes police officer was accidentally shot during a training exercise at the Anoka County Law Enforcement Range on Thursday afternoon.

A Lino Lakes police officer was accidentally shot during a training exercise Thursday at the Anoka County Law Enforcement Range.

"At this time, it is unknown how the injury occurred," the Anoka County sheriff's office said in a statement. "There were three officers shooting at the time of the injury."

Officer Chad Schirmers was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he was in serious condition late Thursday, hospital officials said.

The incident occurred at 4:30 p.m., when Lino Lakes officers were conducting firearms training at the gun range in Coon Rapids. Schirmers, who has worked for the Lino Lakes Police Department for three years, was struck with a round, the sheriff's office said.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was asked to investigate the accident, the sheriff's office said.
