A man who assisted in the bombing of a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, Calif., last month was arrested at JFK Airport after he was located in Europe, officials said Wednesday.
The man, identified by law enforcement sources as Daniel Park, 32, of Washington State, is expected to appear in Brooklyn Federal Court on Wednesday afternoon as he makes his way back to the West Coast to face charges in the terror attack.
U.S. federal authorities arrested Park at JFK after he was brought back from Europe, sources said.
Park is accused of providing “material support” to 25-year-old Guy Bartkus, who set off a powerful explosion outside the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic on May 17, killing himself and injuring four other people, officials said.
The detonation was so massive that it gutted the building and could be felt more than a mile away, the FBI said at the time. The explosion’s blast wave shattered windows in nearby buildings.
Authorities have described Bartkus as a member of the anti-natalist movement, a fringe group that opposes childbirth and population growth and believes people should not procreate. Officials said he tried to livestream the explosion, but the attempt failed, the FBI says.
Witnesses described a loud boom followed by a chaotic scene, with people screaming in terror and glass strewn along the sidewalk and street. A body was found near a charred vehicle outside the clinic.
It was not immediately clear if Park knew what Bartkus was planning, officials said. Authorities in Palm Springs said the bombing was driven by anti-natalist beliefs and was identified as an “intentional act of terror.”
Park is expected to be prosecuted in California, officials said.
