What to know

  • Austin police released body camera and surveillance footage from Sunday's mass shooting outside a busy bar, where a gunman killed three people and wounded more than a dozen.
  • Investigators said a 53‑year‑old suspect fired a handgun from an SUV into a crowd, shot a pedestrian with a rifle and later opened fire on officers before they returned fire and fatally shot him.
  • Sixteen additional victims were treated at hospitals, two remain hospitalized, and the FBI is investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism.

The shooter—identified as Ndiaga Diagne, 53—drove away before stopping nearby. He exited the SUV carrying a rifle and shot a pedestrian while walking back toward the bar area.

The released body camera footage shows responding officers pushing bystanders out of the line of fire and setting up a perimeter as they searched for the gunman. Within minutes, three officers located Diagne, and he opened fire at them.

Officers to returned fire, and Diagne was struck multiple times. He died at the scene after officers took him into custody and called for medics.

"I again want to recognize the bravery of our officers," Chief Lisa Davis said at a Thursday news conference releasing the footage. "You saw that first hand as they ran into danger to stop this. It is quite clear that they saved multiple lives. And also to the brave people around, giving directions on where this guy was. Everybody was looking to identify him and stop this threat."

Two victims in the shooting died at the scene. A third victim died Monday at the hospital.

Sixteen others were treated for injuries at area hospitals. Two remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition.

The FBI is investigating the shooting as a potential act of terrorism, according to the department. Diagne, a Senegalese national and naturalized U.S. citizen, wore a sweatshirt that said "Property of Allah" during the attack—which came a day after U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran—and a shirt underneath had an Iranian-flag theme, according to four law enforcement officials, per NBC.
