A man who was suspected in multiple armed robberies and in a recent shooting died Sunday after a shooting with a Hollywood Police officer, the police department said.
Donald Taylor, 32, was allegedly involved in five different crimes in Hollywood and Miramar within the span of a few days last week and had a warrant for his arrest as of Sunday afternoon, Deanna Bettineschi, a spokesperson for Hollywood Police, said in a news release Monday.
While surveilling Taylor about 4 p.m. Sunday near Southwest 61st Avenue and Southwest 19th Street in Miramar, detectives tried to “make contact” with him, Bettineschi said.
“The suspect was armed and refused to listen to officer’s verbal commands. At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the news release said.
Taylor was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital and pronounced dead.
Officers recovered a gun from the scene of the shooting.
Surveillance cameras recorded Taylor first breaking into a car parked in the 1400 block of South State Road 7 by smashing the back passenger’s side window and crawling through it on Wednesday. The police department said a gun was stolen during the burglary. At a business about a mile away in Miramar, Taylor allegedly pointed a gun at a customer about 30 minutes after the car burglary.
He was accused in three separate crimes on Friday, beginning with a shooting in the 1200 block of Hollywood Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. where the victim, who Taylor knew, was critically injured, Bettineschi said.
That evening, he went into a Dollar General in the 800 block of South State Road 7 with a gun and pointed it at a cashier before running away, surveillance video released Monday showed. Taylor then allegedly robbed a Walgreens in the 5900 block of Pembroke Road while armed with a gun on Saturday evening, the police department said.
Taylor, of Miramar, had no criminal history in Broward County, court records show. He had two active warrants in pending misdemeanor cases from 2023 and 2024 in Palm Beach County, one from allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house in Riviera Beach and another for shooting a gun into the air at her home while arguing with one of her relatives, according to probable cause affidavits.
Bettineschi said one officer was involved in the shooting Sunday and has been placed on administrative duty.
It is at least the 11th shooting with officers in South Florida since the start of the year.
Most recently in July, a man was critically injured in a shooting with Wilton Manors Police officers who responded to a call of a domestic disturbance. In early May, a woman carrying a gun was shot and killed by Broward Sheriff’s deputies in Deerfield Beach.
