"It was a fight for his life," said an Amarillo police spokeswoman about the struggle an officer and a citizen were caught in with a suspect who reached for the officer's gun and fired a shot.

A bystander helped a Texas police during an arrest Friday as a suspect grabbed an officer's gun and fired a shot.

The incident happened at around 8 a.m. when an Amarillo police motorcycle officer pulled over a driver on an existing warrant, KDFA-TV reports. When the officer tried to arrest the suspect, the man began fighting and fled on foot.

The officer chased the suspect into an alley and was able to knock him to the ground. The two began struggling, and the suspect tried to reach for the officer's gun.

A nearby bystander then came to the aid of the officer and tried to help subdue the suspect. That's when the suspect grabbed for the officer's gun again, and a shot was fired in the melee.

The bullet grazed the officer, but he was still able to hold down the suspect until other officers reached the scene. The officer was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital. No one was seriously injured.

“I’m really proud of the officer,” said Sgt. Carla Burr. “It was probably terrifying and he was able to keep the suspect from hurting him, hurting anyone else.”

The suspect was arrested and charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer, attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer, possession of controlled substance, resisting arrest, evading arrest and other counts.

”We thank the citizen that stopped. That probably made a huge difference for the officer, said Burr. "It allowed him to gain control, it allowed him to feel a little more confident. It was a fight for his life.”
