Detectives believe a vehicle that approached a traffic stop and opened fire on St. Louis police officers and ATF agents might have been part of an attempted ambush targeting law enforcement.

St. Louis police are searching for suspects in connection with "an attempted ambush" of officers during a traffic stop Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. when police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents had pulled over a vehicle, the department stated in a news release. No details were released about why the vehicle was stopped.

"Within minutes of the stop, a vehicle approached the area and occupants opened fire on law enforcement officers," the department stated, adding that detectives believe the vehicle might have been part of "an attempted ambush of the officers."

Police began pursuing the suspected vehicle after the shooting. The vehicles was eventually abandoned, and a search of the area did not locate the suspects.

No license plate was on the suspected vehicle. Anyone with information about the vehicle or security camera footage of the incident should contact police.
