Oct. 17--GLASGOW -- The Glasgow Police Department introduced a new face for the department on Tuesday.

Cain, a 19-month old Belgian Malinois, is the newest K-9 unit.

His partner, Sgt. Michael Burton, traveled to Little Rock, Ark., and spent the week at an academy training with Cain on duties of his job, including tracking and K-9 first aid.

Burton and Chief Guy Turcotte searched for several months online with specific search criteria before they found Cain,

"I wanted a dog that would be multi-purposed," Turcotte said. "A dog that can do drug tracking on the criminal side ... and community events as well."

Burton had worked with a K-9 unit during his time with the Adair County Sheriff's Office, he said.

The new K-9 is a passive alert dog, meaning he will sit at the location where he finds a substance, as opposed to aggressive alert dogs who dig, scratch and bark at a location. Turcotte said the dog will be more approachable and will be able to be at community events without a fear of him biting.
