Aug. 31-- "It was operating the way it was supposed to. It didn't get everything, but it did capture a significant portion, which will now become part of the evidentiary part of the investigation," Chief Luis Velez said Thursday.
Velez wouldn't release the name of the officer who shot and killed 21-year-old Edward Valdez III.
Valdez reportedly shot the officer twice -- once in the head -- with a BB gun. The officer responded by firing eight shots at Valdez.
"There's always people who will say, 'Why didn't you shoot the gun out of his hand,' or 'Why didn't you shoot him in the leg.' That's not how we're trained," Velez said. "We only shoot for the center of mass."
An autopsy showed Valdez died from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and an extremity, Pueblo County Coroner James Kramer said.
The officer was treated and released from the hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. He is on paid administrative leave.
