Aw Shucks, 450 Bushels of Clams Spill on N.J. Parkway

A tractor trailer carrying 450 bushels of fresh clams overturned this morning on the Garden State Parkway, resulting in a three-mile backup in Bass River and sending the driver of the truck to the hospital.

May 30--A tractor trailer carrying 450 bushels of fresh clams overturned this morning on the Garden State Parkway, resulting in a three-mile backup in Bass River and sending the driver of the truck to the hospital.

State police responded to the crash about 6:15 a.m. at milepost 55.6 in the southbound lanes in Bass River, police said.

The driver was briefly entrapped and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, with minor injuries, police said.

State Police spent nearly five hours clearing the road and removing the clams from the shoulder area. The scene was cleared just before 11:15 a.m.

As of 11:15 a.m., there still is a three-mile back-up in the southbound lanes.
