March 22--An off-duty Chicago police detective shot a man and a woman after he stopped his car to check out a "disturbance" outside his Lawndale neighborhood home on the West Side early Wednesday, police said.
The man approached the detective's car at about 1 a.m. near 15th Place and Albany Avenue and pointed what police said was a handgun at him. The detective opened fire, hitting the man in the hand but also shooting a woman in the head, according to police.
The man then ran from the scene but returned a short time later, police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said. No weapon was recovered from him or at the scene, she said.
Police said the man was eventually taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, but a condition on the woman was not available.
A statement released by police said the detective was driving out of an alley in his vehicle when he saw several people causing a disturbance. He rolled down the window to investigate when a man approached him with a handgun, police said.
"At that point, the offender pointed the weapon in the direction of the detective," the police statement said. "The detective announced his office and, as a result of this action, the detective discharged his weapon from his vehicle striking the offender."
After the shootings, the area was cordoned off with yellow and red tape, and about a dozen police investigators, some holding flashlights, canvassed the area.
