March 18--A 52-year-old Roseville man was shot and killed early Sunday morning after police said the man pointed a handgun at police officers responding to a call about a man threatening suicide.
Police dispatch received a call from a crisis center about a man who had called them threatening to commit suicide and shoot officers who showed up, Roseville Police Chief Michael Pachla said in a statement released by the department.
Officers responded to the 32200 block of Judilane, near Masonic and Kelly, this morning around 4 a.m. and saw the man outside his home with a gun, police said.
The man, who lived at the home with his mother, was ordered to drop his gun numerous times, police said.
"He pointed the firearm at officers, and they responded," the statement said.
Neighbor Frances Grenanco, 44, woke up to the sound of yelling outside her home Sunday morning. She looked out a bedroom window at about 4 a.m. and said she saw two officers behind her car parked in her driveway with their guns drawn.
"They said 'Drop the gun! Drop it!' " she recalled. "They said 'You're surrounded.'"
She said she heard six gunshots, got in the closet and called her brother on the phone.
Grenanco said she did not see her neighbor when she looked out the window, but has had interactions with him in the past including a time last summer when she said a flash lit up her backyard one night. She said her neighbor told her the next morning he was taking pictures of lights in her yard because they looked pretty.
"I don't think he was all there," she said. "I was a little nervous about him."
Sheila Thompson, 43, stops by the neighborhood at least once a week to see her parents who have lived next door to the man for about 10 years.
Although she said the man had some issues, he was helpful to her parents and would cut their grass and shovel the snow, Thompson said.
After the shooting Sunday, an officer administrated CPR on the man, whose name has not been released by police. Paramedics arrived, and the man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
Police said they've been called to the home before for similar type of calls.
Neighbor Natalia King, 55, who lives two doors down from the man, said police have been called twice before for standoff situations involving the man since she moved in back in 1977. Neighbors also described situations where police were called when the man shot a gun in his yard.
King recalled waking early this morning and heard "Put it down! Put it down!"
She said she heard between four and six gunshots from her bedroom.
"It's hard to tell because it was rapid," she said.
King described the man was nice and said he tried to be helpful to neighbors but was troubled.
"I wish that he would have been able to get the right help," she said. "I feel really bad for his mom and family."
No officers were injured during the shooting. An investigation is underway to determine how many shots were fired, police said.
At least three vehicles parked near the home had windows shot out, neighbors said.
The three officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending a review of the case by the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.
It's the second officer involved shooting this morning in the area.
In St. Clair County, a Marine City police officer responded to a call of a suicidal person in around 2:30 a.m.
Police said the person drew a pistol near M-29 and North Belle River Avenue at the Broadway Bridge and was ordered to drop it.
"The suspect pointed his weapon at the officer," a statement released by Marine City Police Chief Donald Tillery said. "The officer was forced to fire his weapon at the suspect, striking the suspect."
The 48-year-old man is in stable condition this morning at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Mount Clemens, Marine City Mayor Charles Browne said.
That shooting is being investigated by Michigan State Police.
