GREENFIELD, Ind.
A Hancock County Sheriff's deputy faces criminal charges after sending his ex-girlfriend thousands of harassing text messages and threatening to kill her if she didn't take him back, police said.
Jake K. Smith, 27, who has been on paid suspension since Feb. 2, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of harassment and intimidation and one felony count of official misconduct.
Smith's ex-girlfriend told police that Smith had been harassing her since they broke up around Christmas, sending her 3,208 text messages and calling 164 times between Jan. 1 and Feb. 22, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Smith repeatedly told his ex that he would kill her if she didn't take him back, saying he was going to come to her apartment, kill her and then drive himself to jail, according to the affidavit.
"I want to be a (expletive) family and take care of you and your (expletive) kids," Smith said, according to the affidavit.
The woman told police that Smith often followed her home from work, sat outside her house and vandalized her car.
"I'll go to your school, I'll go to your work and I'll run my mouth. I'll (expletive) everything up," Smith told the woman, according to the affidavit. "If I lose my job, I'll go back working for my dad and you can go back to being a bar whore."
Police said at least two of the harassing calls were made while Smith was on duty, prompting the misconduct charge.
Smith has been with the department for three years.
