A man fleeing the scene of a reported burglary attempted to run over a responding police officer early Friday in south Wichita, and it took law enforcement officials several hours to find and arrest him.
The officer went to the 1300 block of South Bebe shortly after 12:30 a.m. to check on a burglar alarm when a man in a large GMC pickup tried to run him over as he fled the industrial area just southeast of Kellogg and I-235, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. The officer was not hurt.
The search for the truck was hampered by the strong thunderstorms that rolled through the metropolitan area overnight, the supervisor said, but the truck was eventually spotted in the 7700 block of North Rock Road. The man drove out into the middle of a field, and authorities cordoned off a one-mile perimeter.
The suspect was eventually arrested without incident at 5:19 a.m.
