Dec. 12--Two Bloomington police officers were hospitalized late Saturday in a struggle with a man who showed up at a home on East Wylie Street and banged on the door, demanding residents there to let him in.
Officer Matt Gilmore dislocated his knee, and officer Jeff Rees sprained his wrist and suffered injuries to his right foot and eye, according to a police report. Gilmore was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital by ambulance and Rees was taken in a police car. Both were treated and released early Sunday morning.
Neighbors in the area counted seven police cars surrounding the residence in the 400 block of East Wylie Street.
Residents at the house had told police a stranger was standing on their porch, knocking on the door and yelling to let him in.
When officers asked 23-year-old David Anthony Rose where he was trying to go, he said, "Here," according to the report. He insisted he knew the people inside the house, and when officers asked him who lived there, he replied, "Hoosiers."
When police asked for Rose's ID, he ran from the front porch into the backyard, and police chased him.
Bloomington police Sgt. Shane Rasche said Rose refused to listen to officers' commands to stop, and as they tried to arrest him. he punched officer Rees in the face and struggled to get away.
Rose eventually was taken into custody and faces charges of trespass and resisting law enforcement. He remained in jail Sunday evening on $40,000 surety, $500 cash.
According to court records, Rose was arrested in October on charges of criminal trespass and public intoxication, and in September on charges of public intoxication and resisting law enforcement. Both cases are pending.
Court records also show Rose entered a pretrial diversion program in January 2009 that allowed him to pay $428 and complete alcohol education classes in exchange for the court's dismissal of two other convictions -- public intoxication and illegal consumption of alcohol -- one year later.
He entered the same program in 2007 to dismiss similar convictions of public intoxication, illegal consumption and resisting law enforcement.
