WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. -- The San Bernardino County District Attorney's office justified the officer-involved shooting of a distraught Wrightwood man who was killed after a six-hour standoff in February, according to a report released Thursday.
Deputy District Attorney Reid Robsahm stated in his report that a California Highway Patrol officer who shot and killed Jeffrey Street did so to protect his life and others.
On Feb. 27, Street's wife called 911 and told dispatchers her husband had been drinking, taking medications, had written a suicide note and was armed with a handgun, according to the report. The woman said her husband was depressed and lonely.
San Bernardino County Sheriff 's and CHP officials responded to Street's home in the 900 block of Partridge Road and saw Street carrying a handgun inside the house. A deputy repeatedly ordered him to put down the gun, according to the report, but Street didn't respond and began firing at the officers.
The CHP officer hid behind a tree and returned three shots, aiming at the bullet holes in the window.
"He believed that Mr. Street was trying to kill him and his partners and felt that he needed to protect himself and his partners," Robsahm stated.
The Sheriff 's SWAT team arrived, and authorities entered the house several hours later to discover Street had been struck in the face with one of the CHP officer's bullets and killed. They also found five loaded rifles and shotguns in the house.
