A 25-year-old Santa Rosa man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a gang-related attack in September, Santa Rosa police said.

Julio Castillo was one of two people who confronted a 22-year-old man and 24-year-old woman at 4 a.m. Sept. 10 near Mendocino Avenue and Steele Lane, Sgt. Rainer Navarro said. Castillo and the other person pushed them to the ground and began beating and kicking them, "shouting gang challenges and trying to claim that specific area as theirs," Navarro said.

Castillo and the other person fled the area on foot, Navarro said. The victims were treated for injuries to their face and heads.

Over time, detectives linked Castillo to the assault. He was arrested Tuesday and was being held without bail at the Sonoma County Jail because he was also on probation for a prior gang-related felony offense, Navarro said.
