Dec. 12--POLKTON TOWNSHIP -- A 28-year-old Grand Rapids man was arrested and a loaded rifle and spotlight confiscated after the man led police on a high speed chase early Sunday morning south of Coopersville.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department became involved in a chase on 68th Avenue near Garfield Street about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, said Ottawa County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Bob Ruster. The pursuit on 68th Avenue reached speeds over 100 mph, he said.
The driver of the suspect vehicle turned off his lights and changed direction, causing the sheriff's deputy to briefly lose sight of the suspect's car. An officer used the spotlight on his police car to find the vehicle again, Ruster said.
The pursuit continued south on 68th Avenue for a short distance before the suspect pulled over for police. He was taken into custody without further incident, Ruster said.
Police seized a high-powered rifle and a portable spotlight from the front passenger seat of the vehicle, Ruster said. The gun was loaded and a 7 mm Remington Magnum round was found in the chamber.
The suspect confessed to police that he was attempting to poach deer in the area, Ruster said.
The man was taken to the Ottawa County Jail and lodged on charges of operating while intoxicated 2nd offense, fleeing and eluding police, felony firearm and other firearm charges.
His name was not released pending arraignment.
