BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --
Two girls found out just how dangerous it is to swim in the Kern River after they were swept away by the fast-moving current and had to be rescued Wednesday night.
The Bakersfield Police Department said a 12-year-old and 13-year-old girl were swimming in a canal just north of Sam Lynn Ball Park around 6 p.m. when they were swept downstream over a weir.
Police said a couple of Good Samaritans were able to rescue the 13-year-old but the other girl was stuck in the middle of the river holding on to shrubbery.
Two BPD officers arrived and Officer Andrew Ferguson went into the swift-moving, chest-high water to grab the girl and carry her to safety, police said.
Police said the girls were visibly shaken up, but otherwise OK.
