A Volusia County Beach Patrol captain collapsed and died while training Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Officials said Capt. John I. (Jay) McDonough, 52, was jogging in Daytona Beach when he collapsed, according to News 13.

A bystander called 911 when McDonough reportedly went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to Halifax Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, the station reported.

McDonough joined the beach patrol in April 1995, and worked his way up through the ranks.

The Beach Patrol members are more than just lifeguards in Volusia County; they're sworn law enforcement officers.
