Ohio Deputy Run Down by Dad Upset over Video of Son's Fatal Shooting

An Ohio deputy directing traffic at a college commencement ceremony Friday was run down by a man upset after viewing body camera footage of the fatal shooting of his son by police earlier that day.

The incident happened at around 1 p.m. when a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy was working traffic enforcement during the University of Cincinnati's commencement ceremony, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The deputy was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

"The officer was just out doing his job," Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said during a press conference.

 The deputy, whose identity hasn't been released, had retired from the agency and was working as a "special deputy," according to Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey.

"He was so well-liked and well-known,” said McGuffey, who described the deputy as a "tremendous person."

Hours before the crash, the suspect—identified as Rodney Hinton Jr., 38—had viewed body camera footage from the fatal shooting of his son. In the video from May 1, Cincinnati police had stopped a car reported stolen and encountered four suspects, including Hinton's 18-year-old son.

According to police, Hinton's son was armed and fled the scene on foot. During a foot chase, Hinton's son was fatally shot by police when he allegedly pointed a gun at officers. 

An attorney for Hinton's family said he was "very distraught" while watching the video and couldn't finish it.

Cincinnati police are investigating the incident.
