Fla. Law Enforcement Officer Dies in On-Duty Interstate Collision

Officer James McWhorter of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Law Enforcement Division was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Interstate 95 in Nassau County.

A Florida agricultural law enforcement officer was killed in a highway collision Saturday.

The crash happened at about 8:30 p.m. as Officer James McWhorter of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Law Enforcement Division was trying to cross Interstate 95 in Nassau County, WJXT-TV reports. That's when his marked vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

McWhorter, 31, died in the crash. Four passengers in the truck suffered minor injuries.

“Officer McWhorter was an excellent officer and devoted to his family, co-workers and the public he served," said Col. James Wiggins, director of the Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement. "We will miss him greatly and send our condolences to his family, friends and fellow officers during this difficult time.”

McWhorter, 31, had been with the agency since January 2019. He is survived by his fiancée and four children.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
