Houston Police Officer in Off-Duty Collision with Train Dies

Houston Police Officer Vidal Lopez, who had been with the agency for nearly 20 years, had been traveling to work when his vehicle was struck by a train.

The Houston police officer who was hospitalized after his car collided with a train has died, Chief Troy Finner said Monday.

Officer Vidal Lopez died Monday, surrounded by his family, Finner said.

Lopez, 42, was hit around 6:53 a.m. Dec. 7 at 6700 Fulton St. while on his way to work, Finner said. Lopez was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Lopez has been with the Houston Police Department for just short of 20 years, and currently works in the Office of Technology Services. He was married, with his first child on the way, Finner said.
