A Tennessee sheriff's deputy died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in an accident nearly a decade ago.

Hardeman County Sheriff's Deputy Dale Wyman was involved in an on-duty crash while responding to a call in August 2012, the department stated on social media. The accident left him paralyzed from the chest down, and he continued to suffer medical complications.

"Dale Wyman was not only a hero to the county he served but also his country by serving in the United States Army," the department stated. "Dale will be greatly missed."
