A Quitman County, Mississippi Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash while responding to a reported shooting early Sunday morning.

Deputy Jimmy Clark was en route to the call when he swerved to dodge two dogs in the road in the Falcon community on Mississippi 3 when the crash occured, according to The Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

Friends and co-workers said that Clark was always willing to come to their aid, no matter who they worked for or whether he was on or off duty.

"He was just helpful. He worked a lot of night shifts from 12-8, and he'd call whoever worked the day shift after him, he'd call in the morning to say, 'If you need me call me,' and he did that every day. That was him," Quitman County Deputy Tommy Bryant told the newspaper.

Clark served with the Quitman County Sheriff's Office for two years and had previously served as chief of the Crowder Police Department.

He is survived by his wife and children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
