A Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake K-9 was killed during the pursuit of a wanted fugitive early Thursday morning.
K-9 Dingo was deployed after Torey Chase Massey, who attempted to flee police on foot after a vehicle pursuit that ended in the area of Brickyard Plaza at 3300 S. 1100 East in Millcreek, according to KUTV.
Officials say that Massey fired several shots, critically wounding the police dog. Dingo was transported to an animal hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Massey, who was wanted for theft, robbery and aggravated assault, was then taken into custody of the U.S. Marshals. The Unified Police Department was assisting the U.S. Marshal's Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team in locating Massey.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is handling the investigation into the death of the K-9.
